Best Practices for RFD Creation

Design is more than just making things look pretty. It's about communicating a message, solving problems, and creating an experience. But how do you get a designer to understand your vision?

That’s where a Request for Design (RFD) comes in! Here’s your guide to crafting an RFD that’ll make designers jump at the chance to work with you.

1. Start with Introducing Your Project

Kick things off with a brief but punchy introduction to your project. Set the stage by outlining what the project is, its objectives, and why it’s important.  Make sure to give the designer a sneak peek into the grand plot, so they can know what to focus on when they create the design.

Example: “We’re excited to redesign our brand’s website to better reflect our new sustainability initiatives. Our goal is to make the site not just a place to find information, but a place for eco-conscious customers.”

2. Be Crystal Clear About Your Goals

Design without direction is like sailing without a compass. Clearly state what you hope to achieve with the design. Are you aiming for increased engagement, a refreshed brand image, or perhaps a new look that better resonates with your audience?

Example: “Our primary goal is to create a 3d website that highlights our eco-friendly products and engages our customers through interactive features.”

3. Know Your Audience: Design for Them

The design needs to speak directly to your audience. Provide details about who they are, what they like, and how they interact with your brand. This helps designers tailor their work to the tastes and expectations of your target audience.

Example: “Our target audience includes eco-conscious millennials who value sustainability and modern design. They appreciate clean and minimalistic aesthetics content that educates them about environmental impact.”

4. Specify Your Must-Have Elements

Detail any specific elements that must be included in the design. This could be anything from brand colors, logos, and typography to particular features or functionalities. Think of it as a shopping list for your designer.

Example: “Please incorporate our new brand colors (green, beige, and white) and use our updated logo prominently on the homepage. We also need a section dedicated to our sustainability practices and a product catalog.”

5. Outline the Design Constraints

Every project has its limits. Outline any constraints, such as budget, timeline, or technical requirements. This helps designers work within the given parameters and avoid surprises later on.

Example: “The budget for this redesign is $5,000, and we’re looking to launch by the end of the next quarter. The website should be optimized for both desktop and mobile devices and adhere to accessibility standards.”

6. Provide Inspiration and Examples

Share examples of designs you admire or that align with your vision. This isn’t about copying but rather giving the designer a sense of the style and vibe you’re aiming for. Visual references can be incredibly helpful.

Example: “We love the clean, modern look of [Example A] and the interactive features of [Example B]. We’d like our website to have a similar feel but tailored to our unique brand.”

7. Communication is Key: Stay Available

Let the designer know how they can reach you for any clarifications or feedback. Establishing a communication channel ensures that the project stays on track and any questions are promptly addressed.

Example: “Please feel free to reach out to me via email or schedule a call if you have any questions or need further clarification. I’m available for feedback and quick reviews throughout the project.”

8. Wrap It Up with a Thank You

End your RFD with a note of appreciation. A little gratitude goes a long way and helps set a positive tone for collaboration.

Example: “Thank you for taking the time to review our RFD. We’re excited to see your creative vision come to life and are looking forward to a fantastic collaboration.”

Bonus Tip:  Attach any relevant materials like competitor analysis or user research. The more information you provide, the better designers can understand your vision.
